So, I have this cold, right? As colds tend to do, it was in the process of settling into my chest yesterday, to the point where taking deep breaths while attempting to meditate yesterday morning was uncomfortable. Yesterday afternoon I had an appointment with my chiropractor, who asked me how I was feeling, and I said that I had a cold that was settling into my chest. And he said, oh, I can do a little bit of accupuncture for that, on your hands. And I said, great! So I lay face down on the table, and he puts the usual electrodes on my shoulders to try to release the tension there, and then touches my forearms where they're lying on the armrests, just about two inches above my wrists and then says he'll be back in a while. I lift my head up to see a little needle in each arm. He was so fast and painless that I didn't even know he'd done it. And about five minutes later, I could breate a lot better. I mean, I've had accupuncture a couple of times before (for allergies), and its effectiveness seemed to rest largely in the ability of the practitioner - one person seemed to be getting some results, and the other not so much. But this was a startling and rapid improvement, an I-just-used-an-inhaler level of improvement. And it seems to be holding today. I still feel somewhat under the weather, but my lungs seem to be working as well as they were yesterday afternoon. Now I'm thinking that maybe this guy should be treating me for my allergies, too. My insurance will cover a certain amount of accupuncture, and it would be nice to be able to forgo the mountains of allergy medication I've been taking the last few years. Hmmmm.
Yesterday I forced myself to be productive on a number of fronts, even though I wasn't feeling all that well. I went to look at cars at this place down the street, one a 92 Honda Accord with 250000km on it, and the other a 98 Dodge Neon with 154000km. The Accord's engine seemed sound, but I just got a feeling from it that it wouldn't be able to handle trips to Toronto or Buffalo. The Neon's engine had that typical, plastic-and-rubber-bands sound that American compacts do, and the brakes were scraping and would have to be fixed before we would buy. But the body looks to be in good shape, and it seems generally sound, like it would get me to Toronto and back without too much worry. I'm skeptical of American cars, but we're just looking for something that will last a few months to a year, until we can trade it in for something that would actually travel long distances. So the Neon might be okay. The dealer wants $3400 for it, which isn't a bad price according to the book. I'm not bowled over by the prospect of owning this car, but the dealer is just down the street, in easy walking distance, and it would solve the immediate problem of not having a car. Continuing to look is such a hassle, and we wouldn't be stuck with it for all that long. Jeff's coming home a bit early today so he can drive it and see what he thinks.
I've looked at two gyms now. The first a few days ago before I started feeling bad, was a small, low-key place fairly near-by. I felt that it would be okay, but that they didn't have quite the variety of classes that I would like. The second I looked at yesterday and it's a chain, a bit more impersonal, but with three locations in town, thereby offering more classes and class times, and one of the gyms is brand new with a pool that will be opening soon. Also, two of the locations are wymyn-only, but one (with the pool) is coed, so Jeff could come with me to work out at that one and I could still work out at a wymyn-only one when I wanted to. They're having a two-for-one special, which would get Jeff a free membership, and the overall cost is about the same as the first place unless I pay in full for the year in advance, in which case it's either half the cost of the other place, or I could get two memberships for less than the price of one membership at the first gym. So it looks like that's the plan. Now Jeff has to decide if he wants a membership or not. Sadly, a decision has to be made before Friday, since that's when the special ends, and Jeff hates making decisions quickly, so I'll probably just end up going by myself.
My client has decided that we're definitely doing that proposal, even though we're probably not going to get the money and it's a huge amount of work. That's why they pay me the bucks which are moderate in size, I guess. Joy. I need to sit down and try to work out a schedule for getting my own work done in the midst of two huge proposals this month. I've got a lot to do, and at this point, I mainly just want to go back to bed. Hopefully I'll keep feeling better and I'll have more energy in a couple of days.

Jeff needs past Friday to decide? Silly men. It's just a gym; it's not a lobotomy!

Spookily enough, I too am looking at cars at the moment. To rent though, not to buy - but I'm heartily sick of travelling everywhere by taxi (financially viable though it is here) and having total bloody nutters driving me from A to B at risk of life and limb. Hiring the car is more expensive, to be sure, but we can just about afford it. And then comes the wacky delight of driving in Cairo! (Since living here, I have never seen any car chase in any movie which has remotely made my pulse quicken. It's always more a case of thinking 'Huh, those streets are very quiet. And all the traffic's travelling in the same direction. And there are no donkeys. And the people are using the pavement. Huh.')
....yeah, we're going to die horribly, I know.

Neons apparently do well for two-three years of rental life, which can be harsh handling.
Good luck - I hate shopping for and choosing cars.

Sorry you are feeling unwell, my dear. But I'm intrigued by the acupuncture. I was just talking to someone at work today who had acupuncture to treat his tendonitis and his carpal tunnel. I'm thinking about trying it for my knees because I'd like to avoid the eventual surgery.
Oh... and I got your gift! Thank you!!!

The only thing I don't like about Goodlife, in particular, is that they promote and sell tanning, which I believe is just plain bad for you.
At any rate, my recommendation would be that if you join a gym, you consider buying 3 or more consultation hours with a personal trainer. They seem to charge less when you buy trainer time right at the start. Pick a trainer that has some real education behind her/him, and then get some advice on workout plans and proper technique.
If that sounds unappealing, there are always free orientations that give you a little of the same thing.
